About this Event
Being, or becoming, a practitioner includes a continual refinement of the art of psychotherapy - with requirements to complete regular CPD, books, journals & seminars. This monthly group aims to sit somewhere in the middle of those, with a focus on the self-awareness of the practitioner, intersubjectivity and group process.
Within the arena of counselling & psychotherapy, once initial training is completed, there seems a lack of group opportunity to consider how we may be in relation to 'the other', how we're experienced, ways of cultivating an attitudinal stance of empathy or experiencing a sense of universality. The aims of this group are to offer a challenging and stimulating space where therapists from across the city can meet and be met. Personal Development Groups (PDG) are included in most academic training syllabuses due to the benefit to the students and, consequently, their client caseloads. When we understand ourselves and our process on a deeper level, we can enter into our therapeutic work with another in a more grounded manner.
The intended itinerary for the group is for the initial hour to be a facilitated group discussion, on this month's chosen academic journal*, followed by a comfort break of 15 - 20 mins, and then the remainder of the time being a focus on group process. The group is open to all modalities of therapy, with the intention to create horizontal relationships rather than vertical ones that may exist in the therapy arena at large. I believe that we can all learn from each other and this forum provides an opportunity to listen to other points of view, question our own beliefs or assumptions and to take responsibility for our own process.
*This month's paper is "Therapists’ honesty, humor styles, playfulness, and creativity as outcome predictors: A retrospective study of the therapist effect" authored by Refael Yonatan-Leus, Orya Tishby, Gaby Shefler & Hadas Wiseman (2018). It's full reference information is below, please contact me if you require help obtaining a copy.
In the words of Chris Rose (2012), personal development groups are "exciting opportunities for genuine personal learning".
Light refreshments will be available. Cost is £5 per person for 3 hrs CPD.
I look forward to welcoming you into the space.
