FAQs

What experience/special interests do you have?

As a humanistic therapist, my specialism is the human experience - past, present & future. I have an interest in anxiety, trauma & relationships and these interests motivated me to become an EMDR therapist (You can find out more information about EMDR here).

I’ve been an honorary psychotherapist within an NHS service offering counselling interventions to members of staff. Prior to this, my clinical experience included working with families and carers of substance users and young adults in an academic setting.

What’s the difference between psychotherapy, therapy & counselling?

In short, there isn’t much difference. Discussions about this in therapeutic circles are ongoing but none of the titles are protected by law and we all perform a similar role within mental health. Some prefer psychotherapist if academically trained within a university setting, such as myself, and others prefer the term counsellor if they’ve trained in an training institution. I personally use all of the titles interchangeably.

How long do I have to be in therapy for?

How long I’m your therapist for is entirely up to you. No, really it is. I work with you for either a set number of sessions, in order to allow you to plan financially, around work patterns & life, or we can work open-ended with no fixed end date. I do recommend a minimum of 12 sessions for two reasons - the research shows that it takes at least 12 sessions for the therapeutic relationship to develop and secondly… change takes time. It’s important to remember that therapy isn’t a quick fix solution but one that is about cultivation of the growth and shifts you’d like to see in your life.

I take several weeks holiday for training and self-care purposes so there are natural pause-points in the year, and there are no sessions during August.

I’m in crisis/feeling suicidal/struggling - can I have an emergency appointment?

If you’re experiencing a mental health crisis in Brighton, UK, then I’d suggest contacting the mental health rapid response service (MHRRS) on 0300 304 0078, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Other organisations, such as the Samaritans or Mind have 24/7 helplines if you’re based in the UK. It's important that if you're at risk then your situation is handled as an emergency. You're important.

Whilst I can’t offer emergency appointments, there is sometimes the option to increase to twice weekly sessions until you feel they’re no longer needed.

What do you do with my personal information? Is it secure?

I have a privacy policy which can be found here. Your data is processed & stored within a third party cloud based service which is GDPR and ISO compliant.
